National Approach to Anti-Bullying

SIRCC continues to play an active part as a representative member of the government's 'Scottish Anti-bullying Steering' (SABS) group. The Scottish Government, through SABS, has published a consultation document 'that sets out a draft national approach to anti-bullying in Scotland.' The paper outlines broadly the contributions to this approach by sectors and stakeholders nationally and highlights the role of SABS.

 It is a consultation paper and responses are required by the end of February 2010. You can respond online.

Call for Papers: Special edition of the Scottish Journal of Residential Child Care - Health and children in residential care

Health for children in residential care continues to be an area of concern for practitioners and policymakers alike. The Scottish Journal of Residential Child Care will be publishing a special edition in Autumn 2009 which will address this topic. The editors are seeking a variety of papers which will highlight good practice or which will help to throw some light on a particular aspect of the health experiences of children in care. Perspectives from practitioners and researchers will be welcome.

Big opportunities for organisations offering services to young people leaving care!

On Friday 5 March the Big Lottery Fund announced a new £50 million National Lottery investment in Scotland aimed at transforming the life chances of young people leaving care and fundamentally improving the lives of older people with dementia and their carers. The aim of this is to have a substantial and lasting impact, and achieve long-term transformational change for clearly discernable and discrete groups of young and older people who experience greatest need.

The report of the Securing Our Future Initiative (SOFI) was commissioned by the Scottish Government and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities as part of the broader National Residential Child Care Initiative led by SIRCC.

New Networking Website about Residential Child Care

An exciting new networking website promoting Residential Child Care (RCC) has recently been set up by Gareth Wall a registered child care manager and SIRCC has been invited to join. SIRCC would like to encourage engagement from the sector in Scotland. The website could become a very valuable resource.

Research on Past Abuse and Human Rights

The Scottish Institute of Residential Child Care and the Care Leavers' Association have been commissioned to carry out a piece of research that will inform the development of a human rights framework for the design and implementation of an "Acknowledgement and Accountability Forum" on past abuse of children in care in Scotland. This research has been funded by the Scottish Human Rights Commission. The timescale for completion of this piece of work is January 2010.
