Working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Young People in Residential Child Care

Course Aim: 
To consider the particular needs of LGBT young people in residential care and how best residential workers may meet these.
Course Objectives: 
Have raised awareness of the issues facing LGBT young people in residential care
Have learned approaches to supporting young people coming out as LGB or T
Be equipped, as practitioners, with tools to increase their confidence in challenging homo/bi/transphobic discrimination
Have been encouraged, as practitioners, to reflect on and explore best practice approaches to developing a supportive and inclusive environment and services for LGBT young people
SVQ Underpinning Knowledge: 
This may provide some of the underpinning knowledge required for the mandatory units, especially in relation values. It will also have direct relevance to a number of the optional units, such as 'support the social, emotional and identity development of children and young people' or 'contribute to childcare practice in group living'.
Higher National Certificate: 
This course provides an introduction to concepts explored in the units Social Care Theory for Practice, Psychology for Social Care Practice and Sociology for Social Care Practice.
Target Group: 
Frontline residential workers, those with supervisory responsibilities and Unit Managers.
Course Length: 
One day. Designed, prepared and delivered with LGBT Youth Scotland.
