Course Aim:
To help workers understand self harm and to engage more effectively with children and young people who harm themselves
Course Objectives:
Explain some of the causes of self harming behaviour
Understand why young people may choose to self harm to manage their distress
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different strategies of working with these young people
Communicate more effectively with young people who self harm
Make more effective risk assessments
Support other staff in dealing with the anxiety aroused in this work

This course provides an introduction to concepts explored in the units Understanding and Supporting Behaviour, Psychology for Social Care Practice and Protection of Individuals from Abuse.
