Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing in Residential Child Care

Course Aim: 
To help practitioners develop an appropriate focus on issues of mental health in their daily practice with children and young people
Course Objectives: 
Have explored the importance of previous experiences on people's mental health and have greater awareness of how current factors can also affect emotional well being
Have explored the impact of being 'looked after' and of transitions on the mental health of the children and young people they care for
Be more able to recognise and respond to emotional distress and understand the organisational factors that effect emotional well being
Have been introduced to some of the most common mental health difficulties experienced by looked after children and young people
Identify when a child or young person may require additional help and recognise the different roles of health professionals in supporting them

Target Group: 
This course will be useful for all grades of practitioner working in or managing residential care
Course Length: 
3 days. This course can also be taken as six half days or six evening sessions.
