Administration of Medicines for Staff Working in Residential Child Care

Course Aim: 
To equip staff with the essential knowledge required for them to handle safely and correctly give required medication to a child/young person in their care and accurately document this.
Course Objectives: 
Understand the process by which medicines are prescribed, dispensed and required by the child/young person and describe the residential worker's role in this process.
Describe how to access, store and dispose of no-longer required medicine safely.
Understand the need to obtain the individual's consent prior to administering medicine.
Explain how to give prescribed medicine safely and correctly to a child/young person.
Explain how to accurately record the administration (or refusal) of medication.

This course may provide some of the evidence for unit of the HSC 375
Target Group: 
This course would be helpful for all grades of residential care staff, including staff with management responsibilities.
