Just published is an evaluation of a social pedagogy training programme that will be of interest to many residential providers and training personnel.
The programme was offered to a cross-section of Sycamore services staff, including residential workers, foster-carers and education staff. The evaluation found that they all found it highly relevant to their work. One of the key conclusions of the evaluation was that:
This training programme has developed the reflective capacity of the participants; it has enabled them to think about different ways of working with young people and of drawing on theories to inform their work.
Social pedagogy is beginning to make an appearance across the UK, especially in England where a large-scale pilot programme is being funded by the Government. Essex County Council has also committed itself to adopting a social pedagogic approach across all its children’s homes. A number of Universities are also introducing social pedagogy-type courses. In Scotland too many people have felt for a number of years that this approach had a lot to offer to residential and other child care settings.
The evaluation was carried out by SIRCC Assistant Director, Ian Milligan.
